Full License Training

Learner drivers have the unique opportunity of being taught all the driving skills necessary at the Centre with its own internal 2 1/2k roading circuit before being taken onto the main roads. With a variety of intersections, roundabouts, STOP’s and GIVEWAY’s all the basic instruction is able to be covered in a safe controlled environment so that when faced with the same situations on the main roads of New Zealand students are better able to cope with these situations. Vehicles: Both manual and automatic vehicles are available, with our new sponsor Kia New Zealand supplying the whole range of their products from the new Picanto to the Sorento 4 wheel drive, our vehicles are all new and the latest models from Kia New Zealand, which are changed on a regular basis ensuring that students have the latest and up to date safety features.

Anybody who requires driver training from outside the above instructor’s areas can conduct their training at
The Road and Traffic Education Centre.

Safer Motoring Courses

For many years Tony Williams and his Road & Traffic Education Centre training company has advocated higher standards of skill levels to improve driving skills. It has now become more apparent that people are becoming increasingly aware that there are new techniques to learn since passing their driving test many years previous and would like to attend courses that would improve their driving capabilities on the public roads.

In response to this demand Safer Motoring Courses give conscientious drivers the opportunity to become safer and more confident drivers. The facilities available at the Road and Traffic Education Centre for those who wish to master the art of skid prevention, control and avoidance, emergency maneuvers, ABS and Non ABS instruction, demonstrations of Electronic Stability Programmes, reaction time testing with our ‘chalk gun’, time to stop exercises to name but a few with and advanced and high performance driving instruction on the open road.

The courses can be tailored to meet individual needs, from the person wishing to simply increase his awareness on the open road, to the Fleet operator looking at cutting the crash and incident rate (and insurance premium) amongst his company drivers. Whatever your needs, a Road and Traffic Education Safer Motoring Course should be of prime consideration if you are looking to improve driving skills.

It is important to be informed that we have been involved with on road Fleet training for over 40 years throughout the world and is not a recent ’ add on’, this gives you the advantage of high quality instruction honed through years of experience, it is also important to note that we have the best participant to instructor ratio in New Zealand of 3 to 1 for actual driver training, this gives the participants the opportunity of having an instructor on board all of the time for assessment, advice and observation throughout the day. Corporate events and VIP days are run at higher ratios.

WHERE DO THE COSTS GO IN RUNNING A FLEET?
Putting figures to some of them:

  • Erratic/aggressive driving - 30%

  • Poor engine condition - 20%

  • Incorrect tire pressures - 5%

  • Poor wheel alignment - 5%

These figures point towards a lack of driving skills, bad driving habits, and lack of basic vehicle management by individual drivers.

Financial logic demands fleet and transport managers keep their staff and families safe and their company’s vehicles down by also reducing the following:

  • Road Crash costs

  • Litigation and legal costs

  • Insurance claims

  • Compensation costs

  • Injuries and down time

  • Fuel consumption

  • Excessive wear and tear

  • Stressful situations

Skid Recognition, Avoidance and Recovery

Put yourself in this position...Its winter, you are driving along a country lane, the road is wet and there are icy patches.

You round a tight bend and suddenly the rear wheel start towards the opposite side of the road….what would you do?

Or...The car in front of you stops suddenly, you have little time or distance to avoid an accident…….what’s you next move?
You may know the answers to the above situations, but unless you are able to implement them with a reflex action, it may be too late. To most people a skid on a public road is a journey into the unknown, is usually something of a ‘heart stopper’ and few drivers can say they are equipped to handle such a situation.

Skid control is now an integral part of the Road and Traffic Education Centre and is the ‘finishing school’ of many of our driver education programmes. Many methods, some dubious, have and are still being used to teach skid control principles but with the advent of the computerized skid frame, they can be taught on any open concrete or tarmac area. The NZ Skid Car Sportage appears to be quite normal, but sophisticated electronics control the steering of both front AND rear wheels. With the instructor (fully qualified) sitting alongside, the pupil can suddenly be faced with a wet surface, black ice, gravel, or even a complete loss of brakes – all at a touch of a button.

A course with NZ Skid Car will help you prepare for the unexpected, learn techniques required to correct a skid, and more importantly, how to apply them instinctively.

On road 4 wheel drive Advanced

Driver training

Most people have very little knowledge about vehicle dynamics taking place when driving on the road and this includes knowledge of how different vehicles perform when introduced to directional changes, acceleration and deceleration forces, ABS, ESP and other safety devices. Most new 4 wheel drives have the same safety devices as cars and we at the RTEC are able to demonstrate all of these for you in a safe controlled environment at the Road and Traffic Education Centre at Ardmore Airport before going onto the road and coaching participants on the ‘System of Car Control’, observational techniques and forward planning as used by the UK Police driving colleges.

Arriving shortly will be the unique opportunity to experience our 4 wheel drive Kia Sportage skid vehicle which will be attached to one of our 2 Swedish skid frames. Were are able to ‘dial’ in any type of weather and road condition in the world and with this vehicle you will experience the loss of control, be able to identify it, carry out corrective actions but more importantly be taught how to avoid loss of control.
